ECB Equine – The Human Touch!
September 2005
If you’ve ever put your hand in one of our Spas, you know how the cold takes your breath away—but imagine standing in it up to your thighs!
The Delaney Equine Spa Centre, Leinster, Ireland have a large clientele of humans regularly using the ECB Equine Spa. Mostly these are sports teams with leg injuries but some are also using it (as with horses) as a preventative measure to “freshen the legs” as Mark Delany explained. The Irish Aussie Rules Football Team are currently using it in preparation for the World Cup in Australia and it doesn’t appear to just be in Ireland that its catching on. “I sometimes find myself screaming with the cold, but after a hard run it eases the legs and makes me feel refreshed. It also really aided the healing after breaking my ankle” commented Andrew Branston, (SAC of RAF Regiment and Mountain Rescue), brother of ECB Director Ean, who uses the Spa when he returns home to Gloucestershire.
The benefits of humans using the cold water hydrotherapy appear to be similar to those in horses, including the management of oedema, muscle spasm, bleeding, and traumatic pain. Vasoconstriction in submerged areas during treatment leads to the flow of fresh, re-oxygenated blood back into the injured area or “tired legs” post treatment.
Dare you try it?
