Repeat Sagaro Stakes win for Old Friend [amoung others]
April 2005
Alkazar, a long-standing hydrotherapy-rehabilitation success story, repeated his victory from two years ago in the Sagaro Stakes (Group 3) at Lingfield last Wednesday [27th April 2005].
The exciting finish proved the guts and desire that the ten-year old gelding still possesses, with his trainer Hughie Morrison commenting, “He’s had a hard race today, but I’ve never seen him run to the line like that.”
Mr. Morrison, who has worked closely with The Centre for Natural Equine Therapy and a mobile Spa unit operated by Derek Peters, is a firm believer in the benefits spa hydrotherapy promotes. Many of his horses use ECB Spas for the treatment and prevention of injuries on regular occasions.
Hughie received a good deal of publicity after the win, with himself and Derek Peters being interviewed for the BBC South Today programme who were ver interested in the use of Spa therapy in the Equine Industry.
With Alcazars total prize money now standing at £243,130, the period from 1999 to 2003 when he only raced once is a distant memory. Previous to this comeback, Alcazar had cracked his pelvis three times, had a broken bone in a hind leg and had two strained tendons. However, after his residential time at The Centre and continuing “spa breaks” to receive intensive cold spa hydrotherapy, he returned in top class condition.
The Centre celebrated a double with another previous resident winning the same day. No Retreat, who visited The Centre with suspensory damage in late 2002, was the winner of
The Winning Post At Cheltenham Hunters’ Chase at the Cheltenham evening meeting. “There are so many of our previous clients out there now, that we struggle to keep up with the successes, not only in racing, but across all disciplines. The longevity of these performance horses verifies research detailing the neat healing and preventative qualities that cold spa treatments promote,” Sarah Branston, Director of The Centre explains.
